How eco-friendly is high-speed laser cutting?

Here at Laser 24, being mindful of environmental issues is part of our DNA, we are always looking for ways in which we can reduce our carbon footprint. Inspired by World Environment Day, an international event run by the UN Environmental Programme, we wanted to share how we bear the environment in mind throughout our working practices.

Due to the industrial nature of laser cutting and metal folding, it may be perceived as something that isn’t an environmentally friendly process. Here we look at how eco-friendly high-speed laser cutting is, and how the advanced capabilities of Laser 24 can help your business reduce waste.

Efficient fibre laser cutting that reduces waste

Within the laser cutting industry advanced technologies with CAD/CAM design, teamed with a state-of-the-art laser cutter, means fibre lasers cut with exact precision. Compared to traditional laser cutting methods, such as CO2 laser cutting, this exact precision means the entire process is quicker, uses less energy, and reduces material waste.

High-performance machines that use less energy

It’s true that our advanced technologies require significant energy to maintain the thousands of orders we process each year. However, compared to CO2 laser cutting, fibre cutting laser machines can save up to 70% more electricity, making it a technology with one of the lowest running cycles.

The advance in technology for laser cutting machines simplifies the whole production process, meaning less time in production and therefore less energy used than conventional laser cutting processes.

Well-built machines that last

High-performance laser cutting machinery, such as the Bystronic ByStar Fiber 3015 12kW laser cutter, is a significant investment for a company to make, both financially and because of the environmental impact of making them. However, these metal cutting machines are built to last. The lasers have a lifespan of about 15 years, meaning less frequent replacements, helping to reduce waste overall in the bystronic laser cutting process.

No lubricants in laser cutting

Unlike press braking, laser cutting does not require a lubricant to protect the sheet metal from surface abrasion. Research shows that some lubricants can contribute to environmental pollution.

Can Laser 24 offer you a more sustainable Laser cutting solution?

At Laser 24, the efficiency of our high-speed lasers means projects can be completed with impeccable accuracy. Always striving to meet our customers’ requirements, we can work with you to find the best sustainable laser cutting solution.

Paperless and efficient ERP system

We collaborated with our strategic partners to develop an efficient ERP system. This is key to successful automation and lean and sustainable production. According to a report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a UK environmental organisation promoting the circular economy, paper takes about 40 percent of businesses’ waste, severely impacting environmental conservation efforts.

This new ERP system will also significantly save our operational costs and improve the responsiveness in customer services, a study of businesses from the University of Edinburgh indicates that on average, staff members spend approximately 148 hours annually seeking misplaced documents.

How can we help you with your next laser cutting project?

Thanks to our commitment to ongoing investment in world-leading machinery, we have the tools to deliver parts of exceptional quality at unbelievable prices making us one of the leading laser companies in the UK.
